A Reformer Pilates confession
Today’s post will likely conclude a mini trilogy on the body. Two days ago I wrote about the power of psychosomatic inquiry, yesterday’s post was about letting go of tension and holding patterns.
Today I would like to close this little series by confessing my love affair with Reformer Pilates, which has been going on for about 3 years now.
Having tried and fallen in love with all sorts of movement practices over the years, I have found Reformer Pilates to be one of the most effective in producing physical alignment and increasing the body’s functionality in a short amount of time.
Usually being one of two aberrant men in these classes has not stopped me from going to hundreds of them. Nor has the female-sex-toy-shape of some of the accompanying props prevented me from indulging in their startling efficacy.
I believe Reformer Pilates is all about going inside. If you just treat it as another workout, you may not get much out of it or even injure yourself.
But if you look inside, Reformer Pilates is highly potent in pointing at places in your body where you are either holding tension or not moving optimally.
If you’re a woman you likely already know what I’m talking about. If you’re a man, get over yourself and thank me later.
